Group Urges State To Take Action Against Failure To Observe Equal Opportunities By Private Hospitals
A New York advocacy group has urged the state to take action against four different private hospitals, all of which deal with minority groups and repeatedly fail to provide interpretation services for patients that cannot speak much or any English, therefore putting the patients at increased risk in the event of an emergency. The complaint is now being dealt with by the office of Attorney General Eliot Spitzer.New York Immigration Coalition officials have stated that a number of similar cases have been noted at the four different hospitals, and that patients with serious illnesses had been put at risk because of their inability to communicate effectively with medical staff. The group claims that the hospitals have taken no action to address this issue, leaving minority, non-English speaking patients to suffer through lack of communication. A group official stated, "These hospitals have not taken even common sense steps to make it easier for their patients to communicate with doctors."
Although the hospitals have denied these issues, the Coalition group claims that twenty-five percent of patients were unable to understand details about the treatment and the diagnosis regarding their problem, and that ten percent of patients were given treatment without their consent.
Three of the hospitals involved have now made a joint statement with regards to the claims, stating that there is no problem and that issues have not been left un-addressed. The other hospital involved has listed a number of measures that have since been taken, such as staff training in languages and upgrading equipment to help break down language barriers.
