Worrying Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Worrying reports recently released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have shown a steep rise in fatal motorcycle traffic accidents over the last year, and regular increases in the number of fatal motorbike accidents each year for the past seven years. In 2004, nearly four thousand people were killed in motorcycle accidents, which is a steep rise from 2003.There could be a number of reasons for the rise in fatal accidents according to reports. The increase in the number of people riding motorcycles could be a contributing factor, with figures rising from 6.5 million in 1997 to nearly nine million in 2003. However, the percentage of fatal accidents involving motorcycles has also increased - in fact, nearly doubled – during that time, from around five percent to nearly ten percent.
Changes in helmet laws in some states could also have contributed to the rise in fatalities through motorcycle accidents. It was also found during studies and analysis, that around sixty percent of this increase in accidents involved riders aged forty or over, suggesting that age could also come into the change in figures.
The dramatic rise in fatal motorcycle accidents over recent years has also seen a rise in the number of lawsuits filed in relation to motorcycle injury litigation, and even wrongful death litigation where motorcyclists have been killed on the road through no fault of their own.
