Two Brothers File Lawsuits For Harbouring Of Priests
The Catholic Diocese of Joliet is being sued by two brothers, who claim that two priests at a Mokena church sexually abused them in the 1970s and 1980s. The brothers were quite young when they claim to have been abused by the priests, and are now accusing the Catholic Diocese of Joliet of harboring the priests.Now 38-years old, one of the brothers, Tim Shanahan, claims he was abused by one of the priests at St. Mary’s Catholic Church when he was just ten years old. Shanahan is serving a sentence at a correctional facility for drug offenses, and his attorney said that this abuse is part of what led to his problems.
Dan Shanahan, his brother, claims to have been abused by the second priest but at the same church, and at the age of around eight years. Although he didn’t speak a word about the abuse for many years, he claims that he finally decided to speak out because he didn’t want the same thing happening to someone else.
The lawsuit against the Catholic Diocese of Joliet has been filed by the brothers in DuPage County. The two priests named are Rev. William D. Virtue and Rev. James Burnett.
