Man Files Lawsuit Over Terrorist Accusations
A man from Newark has filed a lawsuit after being accused of being a terrorist by a Contra Costa County deputy sheriff. The man, who is Indian in origin, stated that he was falsely arrested on drunk driving charges and was accused of being a terrorist by the deputy.The incident is said to have occurred in May of 2006, when the plaintiff, Mr. Abhinav Bhatnagar was putting gas in his vehicle at a gas station in San Ramon. He claims that the deputy, Jason Ingrassia, approached him and told him that he could place him under arrest because he looked like a terrorist. He claims that the deputy then arrested him on charges of driving while under the influence of alcohol.
The plaintiff also claims that the deputy said: "You Asians create a lot of trouble everywhere in the world and then steal our jobs here." He has filed a lawsuit for false arrest and racial profiling, and the defendants named in the lawsuit are Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department, Deputy Ingrassia, the city of San Ramon and Contra Costa County.
A spokesman for the Sheriff's Department stated: "We were aware of the incident and it was thoroughly looked into." The lawsuit seeks unspecified monetary compensation as well as disciplinary action against the officer involved.
