Man Faces Charges For Baby Brain Injury
The boyfriend of the mother of a young baby is facing assault charges after the baby boy was taken to the hospital and found to be suffering from brain injuries. Gavin Perkins was taken to the Bay Area Hospital, Portland, and doctors quickly determined that a brain injury had been sustained. The four-month-old boy was then flown to Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.Once at the University it was determined that the little boy was suffering from shaken baby syndrome. This is brain damage that is caused by slamming, shaking, or throwing a baby. The mother’s boyfriend, 20-year-old Solomon Streit, was arrested after hospital officials notified the police that Gavin might have sustained the brain injuries due to abuse.
Streit had been living with the baby’s mother, and was arrested on charges of second-degree assault and first-degree criminal mistreatment. As far as officials are concerned, the mother does not appear to have been involved in the incident. However, Gavin was kept in state custody while investigations were being conducted.
As neither the baby’s mother or her boyfriend appeared to have any criminal record, North Bend Police also appealed to the public for further information from anyone that knew anything about the incident.
