Vet Groups Sue Federal Government
A number of veteran groups are suing the federal government over violation of privacy rights following the theft of personal data on over 26 million military personnel. The data was stolen from a Veterans’ Affairs employee, and a coalition of groups has now come together in order to file the lawsuit for this breach of privacy.The class action lawsuit has been filed in the US District Court in Washington, and since details of the theft were revealed a few weeks ago this is the second lawsuit to be filed against the government. An attorney for the vet groups confirmed that the theft had caused a great deal of concern among his clients.
The lawsuit allegedly demands that details of all personnel affected by the theft be disclosed, and that compensation of $1,000 be paid to each of the personnel affected by the burglary.
The complaint stated: "VA arrogantly compounded its disregard for veterans' privacy rights by recklessly failing to make even the most rudimentary effort to safeguard this trove of the personally identifiable information from unauthorized disclosure."
