Meat Loaf Sues Ex-Writing Partner
World famous rocker Meat Loaf has filed a lawsuit against his ex-writing partner Jim Steinman over the use of the words ‘Bat Out of hell’ in connection with music. The phrase comes from one of the rocker’s best known songs from his 1977 album, but Meat Loaf did not actually write the song Bat Out of Hell.Meat Loaf, who is named on the lawsuit as Michael Aday, claims that Steinman wrongly claims ownership of the phrase after writing the original song. He said that since the release of the album in 1977, the phrase had always been linked with him.
More than $50 million is sought as part of the lawsuit. In 1993 a follow-up called Bat out of Hell II was released, and it is now claimed that Steinman and his representatives are trying to stop the release of a third instalment of Bat Out of Hell.
Reports claim that Meat Loaf wants to be the only one to use that particular phrase in a musical context, and the lawsuit aims to give him rights to the phrase and ensure that Steinman cannot claim ownership.
