Nursing Home Abuse – Shocking Reports
Recent studies analyzing the data from many state nursing home inspections have revealed shocking levels of abuse by other residents as well as by staff members. The abuse involved included everything from slapping and shouting to hitting and even rape. It was identified that the abuse tended to occur in homes where there was understaffing or where staff were not trained properly. However, officials state that this is not an excuse for abuse.Steven Miles, consultant to the US Justice Department said, "Everybody who goes to a nursing home is a vulnerable person, and nobody who goes to a nursing home should be subjected to abuse. You don't get a free pass just because these patients are difficult to take care of."
An executive from the Louisiana Nursing Home Association stated that regulations often made it even more difficult to provide protection for vulnerable residents. For instance, elderly residents with a criminal history could not be turned away according to regulations providing they met the criteria and eligibility for nursing home care. This immediately created increased danger for other residents.
The study and analysis of these nursing home abuse reports also concluded that many cases of abuse were never officially investigated, even though it was clear that abuse was going on, and those that were reported were not reported for a long time from the end of the abuse.
