Discrimination Lawsuit Filed Against Goodyear
A sexual discrimination lawsuit has been filed against the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in relation to the denial of employment to hundreds of women in the 1990s. The lawsuit was filed by the US Labor Department, and the suit alleges that many women completed applications for jobs at the Danville Plant in the 1990s and were denied employment because of their gender.The lawsuit is seeking to have the company hire those denied employment, and to provide back pay and other benefits. The US Labor Department said in a statement that between 1998 and 1999 the company followed “hiring process and selection procedures that discriminated against hundreds of female applicants for entry-level positions on the basis of gender.”
The company is denying the charges according to a spokesperson for Goodyear, who also added that the company is trying to reach a resolution through discussions with the US Labor Department. Routine reviews alerted the department to the discrimination according to reports, which is prohibited because the company is a federal contractor.
A Labor Department spokesperson stated: "Companies doing business with the federal government have a responsibility to take all of the steps necessary to establish and maintain an equal opportunity employment program."
