$6 Million Car Crash Settlement Paid By Dearborn
Following a fatal crash that killed a man from the Canton Township, the city of Dearborn has reached a settlement of $6 million in compensation for his wrongful death. The man, William Owen, died in 2003, and the death was allegedly the fault of a traffic ordinance officer working for the city.In the initial court case, a judgement for $25 million was returned by the jury. The settlement is far less than this judgement. A spokesperson stated: "It's more than the city wanted to pay, but it's significantly less than the judgment. It was an unfortunate tragedy that happened and the city was responsible for that because of their employee. The city is pleased with the result."
Agron Seiko, the officer said to be involved, had joined a high speed police chase, and crashed into 35-year-old Owen’s car in the incident. After the original judgment was made, the city made an appeal. The city’s insurers had originally refused to settle any claim whatsoever. However, after the appeal the amount was significantly reduced to $6 million.
One official stated: "Anytime you can reduce a judgment to the tune of greater than 75 percent, you've earned your day's pay."
