Former Safeway Employee Filed Lawsuit
A former employee of Safeway has filed a lawsuit for over one million dollars against the company alleging mistreatment by a supervisor. The former employee claims that the working environment was made hostile and unbearable by the supervisor after he found out that the employee had multiple sclerosis.Forty-two-year-old Cheryl Lee Keller claims that she had to quit in the end because the treatment and working environment sped up the effects of the disease. She filed the complaint in Deschutes County Circuit Court on June 16th. After being contacted by reporters officials from the Bend store where Keller had worked – including the supervisor in question – declined to comment.
The lawsuit alleges that Keller found out she had MS in 2004, at which time she was working in the seafood department of the store. After being told to cut her hours by doctors for health reasons, she was given night shift hours. The lawsuit claims that this was inappropriate because her vision had been affected and she could not drive properly at night.
The suit goes on to claim that the supervisor created a hostile environment and refused to change the shift times when requested by Keller. The suit seeks $1.3 million in damages.
