Boston Settles Wrongful Death Claim
The family of a 21-year-old Emerson College student that was killed last year has been awarded $5.1 million by the City of Boston. The student, Victoria Snelgrove, was killed when a pepper-spray pellet fired by police officers hit her in the eye. Police were firing the pellets to control the celebrations that marked the Boston Red Sox victory over the New York Yankees last year. It is thought that this settlement is the largest that the city has ever awarded for wrongful death.A police spokesperson has already stated that the young student was not engaged in any unlawful activity at the time, nor was she the target of any officer. It seems that the incident was simply a tragic accident that resulted in the loss of a young life, and that the pellets were being fired only to try and control overzealous crowds that were celebrating the Red Sox victory.
One of the senior officers that fired pellets on that day has been in the police force for nearly forty years, and the police commissioner has confirmed that he has now decided to retire. The senior officer was also in charge of operations on the day that Victoria was killed with the pepper-spray pellet.
