Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Over Steamer
A South Carolina state judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed over the discovery of a sunken steamer and its treasure, and has stated that the state is not the place to hear that particular lawsuit. However, officials for the plaintiff’s are urging the judge to reconsider, asking him to hear more arguments relating to the case.The lawsuit stemmed from the finding of the steamer SS Republic in 2003. The steamer, which was over 200 feet in size, was filled with gold and artefacts worth over $75 million. It sank in 1865 enroute from New York to New Orleans, where it was taking money and supplies.
The discovery of the vessel was made by Odyssey Marine Exploration of Florida. However, it is claimed that the company found the wreck after a shipwreck hunter provided information relating to its whereabouts. However, the judge does not think that South Carolina should get involved in the case.
"The property in dispute and the activities that lead to this dispute took place in Florida," the judge wrote. "South Carolina's adjudicating this dispute would impinge on Florida's sovereignty and its right to adjudicate a dispute between two Florida corporations arising out of actions that took place in Florida."
