PHS Settles Lawsuit
Oregon based Providence Health System has settled a lawsuit relating to allegations that it charged higher rates for people that were not insured compared to those that did have insurance. The non-profit hospital chain was sued after it was claimed that some patients without insurance were being charged higher rates.A spokesperson for the company stated that many uninsured patients will now be awarded a refund or discount on past bills. Around one thousand patients are expected to receive discounts or refunds from the hospital chain as part of the settlement.
The company has seven hospitals in Oregon. As part of the settlement PHS also started giving discounted rates to uninsured patients from the beginning of this year.
Reports claim that this is the first class action suit against a non-profit hospital to reach a settlement. The lawsuit alleged that the most vulnerable patients were being charged higher rates by Providence Health System.
