Splenda Facing Charges Of False Advertising
An L.A. federal court has ruled that the makers of the sugar substitute Splenda is to face charges and allegations of misleading and false advertising. The lawsuit was filed by the sugar association and states that the advertising and the marketing used for Splenda is false and misleads consumers with these false claims. The sweetener is made by McNeil Nutritionals, and the parent company is Johnson & Johnson.The sugar association states that the Splenda advertising and marketing campaign has led many people into believing that the substitute is ‘as natural as sugar’ when in fact this is a false claim. The association states that millions of dollars has been spent on advertising and marketing for Splenda, and all the glossy advertising has led to millions of people believing these false claims.
Splenda marketing materials state that Splenda is made from sugar so it tastes like sugar. However, the sugar association’s response to this claim is: "Splenda is a hydrocarbon containing chlorine; it is not sugar, and it is not natural. It is in fact an artificial chemical sweetener." The association wants the makers of Splenda to re-think its advertising and marketing and to stop making these false claims.
The sugar association also confirmed that the success of the artificial sweetener, fuelled by the advertising, has resulted in a financial hit on the sugar industry. "It is clear that thousands of sugar growers in the United States are suffering financially because of consumer confusion thinking Splenda is natural."
