Former Cop Sues City Of Jackson
A former Richmond police officer has filed a lawsuit against the city of Jackson, claiming he suffered injuries when his own car was hit by another vehicle that was being pursued by Jackson police in 2004. The ex-cop claims that the reason he had to quit his job was due to the injuries that he sustained.According to 40 year-old Basil Thornton, he suffered a number of serious injuries as a result of the incident, and including ankle trauma, a concussion, lacerated facial muscles, other facial lacerations, scarring, a fractured vertebra, and a broken foot.
The lawsuit was filed in Hinds County Circuit Court in June of this year. It alleges that the car that hit Thornton’s car was stolen, and was being driven by a teenager. The lawsuit seeks $5,000 from the parents of the teenager, and half a million dollars from the city.
The lawsuit states: "The defendants acted in reckless disregard of the safety and well-being of any person not engaged in criminal activity, specifically the plaintiff, at the time of the injury. The pursuing officers should have reasonably expected the possibility of adverse consequences including a serious accident, thus evidencing reckless disregard to the general public's safety."
