Father Gets Second Chance After Death Of Baby Daughter
A man that was convicted of involuntary manslaughter earlier this year has skipped a prison sentence and been given probation by a Franklin County judge. Cameron Nicole Hignite died after going into convulsions in 2001, and medical evidence showed that she had been severely shaken. Her father, Scott Hignite, had been the last person with the baby.Although Hignite faced many years in prison for the death of the baby, his attorney appealed for a lighter sentence due to Hignite’s obvious remorse for what had happened. He stated, "He is not likely to re-offend based on his history, record and the specifics of this case." Further pleas were received from nine other people, including the wife of the defendant and two pastors.
At the trial Hignite himself stated, "I wish you could know me outside this courtroom. I understand by law I'm supposed to be in prison. I took the plea to keep my family together." The Judge, Alan C. Travis, decided to give the baby’s father the benefit of the doubt, stating, "Everything in this courtroom is serious. I must grade this offense against all others I've seen in the past 40 years. There are factors here which overturn the presumption of prison."
Following a series of investigations, the family has now been reunited with another daughter, who had been taken into care while investigations were carried out.
