Cancer Victims Receive Half A Million In Damages
Two cancer victims suffering from cancer of the thyroid have been awarded half a million dollars by a federal jury for their injuries. The cancer victims claimed that they contracted the disease as a result of exposure to radiation from the Hanford nuclear plant, which was used for years in the manufacturing of plutonium.Three contractors were named as defendants in the lawsuit; these were General Electric Co., DuPont Co. and UNC Nuclear Inc. However, because the government ran the plant, and the government employed all the contractors, it will be the government that pays the damages awarded and not the contractors. The cost of the contractors’ defense will also be paid by the government.
There were six plaintiffs involved in the case altogether, all of whom claimed to have been exposed to radiation from the plant in the 1940s, when they were children and lived in the area. However, in three cases the jury ruled against the plaintiff and in one other case they remained undecided.
