Jovonie Ochoa died on Christmas day 2003, and reports confirm that he was starved to below half of the normal weight for a boy of his age, and was also bruised. His aunt, Delores Esqueda, who was supposed to be looking after him during this time, was charged with injury to a child by omission.
The dead boy’s aunt faces up to a 99-year prison sentence. Other family members have also been charged, including the boy’s mother, grandmother, uncle, and step-grandfather. The aunt of the dead boy has four of her own children aged between three and twelve, and decided to relinquish rights in April prior to court trials commencing.
Some other relations have made statements claiming that when they visited the woman’s home, they sometimes saw the little boy had been duct-taped and tied to his bed. Other relations that have been charged in connection with the death have asked to be tried separately from the grandmother of the boy.
