Family Awarded Over $8 Million For Baby’s Burns
The Michigan family of a young boy who was badly burned as a baby due to a hospital fire has been awarded over $8 million dollars in compensation. As a baby, Nathan Laporte was injured when the bedding at William Beaumont Hospital caught fire. This resulted from a doctor causing the flash fire with a cauterising tool.His parents stated that the child had been badly burned and injured as a baby, and that the incident had a profound impact on the child’s life. Nathan is unable to breathe properly, has learning difficulties, and cannot perform basic tasks such as eating or dressing on his own. The parents were looking to claim in excess of $230 million.
However, hospital officials had stated that the child’s lung problems were the result of a sixteen-week premature birth. The hospital did apologize for the fire and any resulting injuries, but stated that many of the problems that Nathan has are the result of being born so prematurely.
However, the family lawyer states that it was the drugs and medication required to treat the burns and injuries from the fire that resulted in lung and brain damage. He added that Nathan is a quadruplet and is the only one of the four that has suffered any health problems.
