Former Bankruptcy Lawyer Gets Five Month Sentence
A former bankruptcy lawyer from Chattanooga has been given a prison sentence over bankruptcy fraud. The US District Judge, Curtis L. Collier sentenced thirty-six year old Shannon Clark to five months after she pled guilty to bankruptcy fraud in a deal that would see any additional charges against her dropped.The former lawyer was also sentenced to an additional five months of home confinement. However, the assistant US District Attorney, Gary Humble, stated that Clark may be able to self report and split the term of her sentence. He added: "The judge was very clear that this is not so much about Shannon as it is about her child because it is a special-needs child."
In addition to the bankruptcy fraud, the former lawyer was also charged with mail fraud, making false statements, and money laundering. The indictment alleges that the lawyer and her husband charged a fee to get applicants credit cards and sent out tens of thousands of pre-approved credit card applications in 2000.
Ms. Clark’s legal license has been suspended, and her husband is currently serving a four-year sentence. It is thought that Ms. Clark will also be on three years supervision after she is released from prison.
