Independent Panel Blames Police Mistakes For Snelgrove Death
Following the fatal shooting of a young Emerson College woman, Victoria Snelgrove, an independent panel has concluded that tactical mistakes and poor decisions made by Boston police officers and seniors led to the death of the young student. Officers were trying to control crowds after a Red Sox championship victory, and the woman was fatally shot in the eye with a pepper pellet. Others around her were also injured by the pellets.Deputy Superintendent Robert E. O'Toole, the commander on the scene, has been slated for using the pellet rifle to try and control the crowds, even though he was not certified to do so. Witnesses have stated that the senior officer placed the rifle on his hip and simply began to spray pepper pellets.
It has also been reported that another person was hit twelve times in the chest with pellets after approaching another officer for some help. The officer, Samil Silta, was also not certified to use the rifle.
Following the death of Victoria Snelgrove, Boston City officials have confirmed that this was the biggest wrongful death settlement in Boston history, with $5 million going to the parents of the deceased woman.
