Nearly $500,000 In Damages To Fake-Drug Arrest Victim
A man who was the victim of a fake-drug arrest by Dallas police has been awarded nearly half a million dollars in damages for the mental anguish caused by the incident. Abel Santos was jailed for nearly four months after he was set up by dubious police informants that had fabricated drugs.The man’s attorney stated that city officials had already made an offer of compensation to Mr. Santos so that the matter could be settled out of court. However, the offer had been rejected, and was far lower than the amount awarded to him through the courts.
There were a number of victims involved in the scandal, and of those taking the city to court, Mr. Santos’ is the first case to be heard and settled. After his arrest, Mr. Santos – who moved to the United States at the age of ten – was deported to Mexico. He was one of nineteen people arrested, and the city has had to put aside nearly $7 million to cover the compensation costs for the remainder of the victims that are awaiting trials.
The city will also have to cover the court costs and legal fees for successful claimants, as well as those of the officers involved in the arrests. The officers that were involved have so far refused to comment.
