Man Awarded Over Half A Million For Abuse By Priest
A man has been awarded $600,000 after being sexually abused by a priest while he was a student at Salesian High School in Richmond. The Martinez man was awarded the compensation by a Contra Costa County jury.Joey Piscitelli was an altar boy when he was abused by Rev. Stephen Whelan. The Reverend was a principal at the school when Joey was a freshman there between 1969 and 1971. He is now 50 years old.
Piscitelli stated: 'I've finally been vindicated. The church has denied and tried to disgrace me and my family for 35 years. They've devastated me and my family, and they've never apologized.'
Both the Salesian Order and Whelan himself have been found guilty, and will each have to pay half of the award. A spokesperson for the order stated: 'The Salesian Society is disappointed with the jury's verdict and will seriously consider an appeal. The alleged perpetrator, a teacher and vice principal at Salesian High School and a priest of the Salesian Society, denies that he engaged in any such conduct toward the plaintiff. In his 37-year career, he has never been accused of abuse by anyone other than the plaintiff. It is difficult for us to understand how the jury came to the conclusion that it did.'
