New Jersey Woman Awarded $4 Million For Wrongful Death
A woman whose daughter was killed on a trip to India has been awarded $4 million in damages for wrongful death. A New Jersey judge awarded Madeleine Swiderski the compensation after the mother sued Indian businessman Pragnesh Desai, who she claims was responsible for her daughter’s death.The deceased, 33-year-old Leona Swiderski, was a model and was travelling to India accompanied by her Indian fiance, Desai. Just weeks before they were due to marry, the pair were flying to India, but Leona went missing in Mumbai. Days later her body was found, and her fiance was accused of having hired someone to kill her in order to get the $1 million in insurance money.
Desai and the friend he was supposed to have hired to carry out the murder were later acquiited at an Indian trial. However, authorities have been fighting the acquittal, and Desia is currently fighting extradition from India.
It took just thirty minutes for the mother of the deceased to be awarded the $4 million in compensation. The judge stated that the liability against Desai was clear. She awarded one million for pain and suffering, and a further three million for economic losses.
