Medical Examiners Accused Of Unauthorized Billing
A number of medical examiners in the Florida area have been accused of billing taxpayers for unauthorized fees, and charging them again for services that they are already paying or have already paid for. More than a dozen medical examiners have been accused of this practice in the state, with local attorneys filing suits against them.So far, 15 out of 23 medical examiner district offices in the state have been included in a class action lawsuit filed against them by Jacksonville attorneys. The lawsuit also includes the medical examiners commission.
According to the lawsuit, the examiners have been charging between $10 and $50 dollars for cremation authorizations. Legally, the family of a decedent must seek permission to cremate from the county medical examiner.
Chad Roberts, the attorney filing the class action lawsuit, stated: "That permission is part of our taxpayer's dollars to the county government. It's already been paid for. Improperly, the medical examiner's office is charging for that again."
