Reporter Sues Over Copyright Infringement
The video sharing service YouTube Inc. is being sued by an independent reporter, who alleges that the site is encouraging visitors and readers to copy protected materials that belong to him. Robert Tur has filed his lawsuit because he says that the copyrights on his protected works are being infringed as a result of this.Tur has become known for coverage of some prolific events such as the OJ Simpson freeway chase in 1994, and the Los Angeles riots. Tur claims that the footage was posted on the site and circulated without any permission having been given by him.
The reporter filed his lawsuit in U.S. District Court late last week. YouTube, which is a video sharing site that was founded last year, allows people to upload and download video footage freely. Tur claims in his suit that this easy upload and download process encourages infringement of copyrights.
A spokesperson for YouTube stated that as soon as complaints were received from Tur, his footage was removed from the site altogether, and the company claims that his lawsuit has no basis because of this.
