Civil Right Complaint Leads To Ford Guarantee
A civil right complaint that was approved by a federal judge has resulted in the Ford Motor Co. guaranteeing black employees access to an apprenticeship training program. This guarantee came after U.S. District Court Judge S. Arthur Spiegel approved the class action settlement earlier this year. The deal regarding the apprenticeship program was finalized earlier this month after the judge held a fairness hearing at the beginning of June.Complaints started to arise in 1998, and employees from various Ford plants began to claim that discrimination was being exercised in relation to black employees accessing the training scheme. It was alleged that black employees who had taken an application test for the scheme after the beginning of January 1997 had not been chosen for the scheme. The training scheme was designed to enable lower level employees to gain valuable training and skills with a view to career progression.
Ford denied any acts of discrimination as was alleged in the complaints. However, the company did agree to set aside the necessary positions on the scheme to guarantee black employees entry onto the scheme. Ford has also agreed to pay nearly $2,500 to current and former employees that claim to have been discriminated against.
