The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission stated that the Marriott Louisville Downtown discriminated against the four women by turning them down for housekeeping jobs because of their head attire.
The commission sued the hotel’s owners in the Louisville District Court, claiming that the hotel unlawfully discriminated against the women. The four women were apparently sent to the hotel to work by an employment agency, but are said to have been told that they could not work because they would not remove the head coverings, known as a hajib.
The Commission is said to have found no reason why the women could not perform as housekeepers whilst still wearing their religious head attire. An attorney for the commission stated that this could be the first case of this particular nature in the Kentucky area.
