Students Threaten To Sue Police Department
A number of students have threatened to sue the Santa Barbara Police Department, alleging racism after an incident at a local nightclub called Cooney’s. A fight broke out in the downtown Santa Barbara nightclub in June of this year, and four people were arrested as a result of the incident.Early the following week a number of students that had been present at the incident are said to have spoken to council officials and complained of police brutality and racism. The students then threatened to file lawsuits against the Santa Barbara Police Department for racist actions and police brutality.
A spokesperson for the police department stated that on the night of the incident officers saw one man hit another across the street outside Cooney’s nightclub. He went on to say that five officers responded initially, but that the entire downtown force had to be called in after the crowd got out of control.
He also claimed that the crowds were hurling objects at the officers, and stated: “They were yelling horrible things at us. It’s not a good feeling when someone accuses you of being a racist. How do you defend yourself against that?”
