Casinos Getting Tough With Staff Appearances
The policies of some big name casinos when it comes to staff appearance have resulted in a number of lawsuits filed by disgruntled employees. One New Jersey woman has filed a lawsuit after she was fired by the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spas for putting on weight. The casino chain operates a ‘weight limit’ policy for staff.The latest lawsuit is against the Harrah’s chain of casinos. The lawsuit has been filed by a long-serving employee, Darlene Jespersen. She has worked at the casino as a bartender for over 20 years, and had excellent records. However, her claim is that she has been fired for refusing to adhere to the grooming policy by wearing make-up at work.
The woman’s attorney stated: “The company's grooming policy gives women employees "a demeaning message that their faces aren't good enough.” Darlene herself stated: "I wanted to be taken seriously at my job. Make-up wasn't going to make me any better of a bartender."
The policy has also caused controversy between the judges at the hearing. One judge said that to enforce a policy making women wear make up was "an intrusive thing for an employer to ask." Another judge stated that if the plaintiff won the case, it would make it difficult for employers to put any grooming rules into place, stating: "How could an employer ever have a grooming policy, because somebody would always be unhappy with it?"
