Computer Company Owner Settles Discrimination Lawsuit
Following the filing of a lawsuit alleging discrimination, the owner of a computer company has come to a settlement. The lawsuit was filed against the owner of Totally Awesome Computers and claimed that the owner had discriminated against employees that were not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as minorities.The settlement came a matter of days before the case was due to be heard in the court. The lawsuit was filed in May 2003 by William Carlton May, a Latino former employee of the company. The former employee claimed that the working environment was made hostile through the owner’s discrimination based on race, sex, and religion.
The lawsuit claimed that not only did the owner of the company make offensive remarks about minority races, but he also used the company’s email system to slate minorities. The lawsuit goes on to state that the plaintiff was demoted to technician from Vice President. After he went to the Anti-Discrimination and Labor Division he was fired.
However, despite the settlement the owner of the company has denied the charges, and lawyers for the defense claim that they have emails that were written and sent from May detailing threats to harm the company, and this is what led to his dismissal.
