The lawsuit expresses concerns that this will result in many cases of delayed treatment where girls are too frightened to see a doctor about their pregnancy for fear of reprisal when it is reported back to their parents. The Center for Reproductive Rights and the Planned Parenthood Federation of America is hoping to block the new law.
The law means that doctors will have to meet or call the parents of the patient 48 hours before it takes place. However, this timescale can be bypassed in emergency situations that do not leave time to give this sort of notice to parents.
One attorney for the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights stated: "The Supreme Court has clearly said that minors, and any woman, should be able to get an immediate abortion, if it's necessary to preserve her life or health." She also added that a delay could "increase the health risks associated with the procedures."
