Gay Father Granted Hearing Regarding Custody Of Child
A gay father, whose long term partner was forced to move out of their shared property by the courts, has been granted a Circuit Court hearing in Maryland. The hearing will focus on a previous Virginia court order stating that in order to have custody of his son, the man’s partner has to move out of their shared property.Karl Ulf Hedberg from Rockville split up with his wife around eight years ago. Although both parents went for custody, it was granted to the father in 2002 under the condition that his long term partner, Blaise Delahoussaye, move out of their shared property. The twelve-year-old child had already been living with both the father and his partner for over five years prior to the ruling.
After the Circuit Court hearing was confirmed, the father’s lawyer stated: "This brings Mr. Hedberg back on the road to reuniting his family under one roof, and allows him to show the court why it is only hurting his son to have his long-time partner live outside of the family home."
A spokesperson for the National Center for Lesbian Rights said that this case could have a big impact on other similar cases: "There are many families across the country who are living with these terrible restrictions."
