EPA Sued Over Pollution Of Beaches
Federal regulators from the Environmental Protection Agency are being sued by an environmental group for failure to protect beaches and the Great Lakes from pollution in Los Angeles.A report was also compiled by the environmental group, the Natural Resources Defense Council, claiming that there was a fifty percent rise in beach closures throughout the county in 2005 due to toxic pollution.
Filed in the US District Court earlier this week, the lawsuit accuses the EPA of failing to "protect the public from the substantial adverse health effects caused by contact with contaminated beach-water." The lawsuit alleges that the EPA missed a deadline set by congress to raise the standards relating to beach pollution.
A spokesperson for the Environmental Protection Agency said that "the state of the nation's beach health remains high, even as the number of beaches monitored increased by 11 percent in 2005."
