Judge Gives Amtrak Go Ahead To Charge Disabled Passengers Extra
A group of disabled people have sued Amtrak for discrimination but the judge has ruled in Amtrak’s favor. The members of the Disabled in Action of Pennsylvania are regular travelers to Washington. However, they sued Amtrak after trying to get tickets on a train to Washington together, and being told that if they wanted to travel together they would have to pay $200 more on some tickets to cover the cost of seat removals for their wheelchairs.The group then sued Amtrak stating that its policy violated the federal Americans With Disabilities Act. However, a federal judge, U.S. District Judge Harvey Bartle III, stated that Amtrak has the right to charge extra as long as they have met the minimal legal requirement when it comes to the provision of disabled facilities. At present, this is one space to park a wheelchair and one space to put an unoccupied chair for each coach.
Since most of the members were only getting an income of around $600 per month, the extra costs were too much for them to pay. They had already paid $90 per round trip ticket for the journey from Philadelphia to Washington.
The group’s attorney was disgusted with Amtrak’s decision to charge more because the group that was traveling together was disabled. He stated: "If you and your family and friends and sisters and brothers and cousins, more than 20, wanted to travel to Washington, you would get a discount as a group."
