Connecticut Lawsuit Dismissed
A federal lawsuit in Connecticut has been dismissed by a judge in a ruling made earlier this week. The lawsuit was filed against Connecticut Episcopal Bishop Andrew D. Smith, and was filed last September by people and officials from a number of Episcopal parishes.The plaintiff parishes accused Smith and others, also named as defendants, of deprivation of rights under a number of amendments. The six parishes that are plaintiffs in the case include: Trinity, Bristol; Christ & the Epiphany, East Haven; St. John’s, Bristol; St. Paul’s, Darien; Bishop Seabury, Groton; and Christ Church, Watertown.
Although the dispute began several years ago, the lawsuit was filed after Bishop Smith inhibited the priest of St. John’s in Bristol in 2005, and installed an administrator and a priest in charge. In 2004 Bishop Smith had offered Delegated Episcopal Pastoral Oversight but none of the six parishes accepted this.
U.S. District Judge Janet B. Arterton made her ruling earlier this week, and stated that the plaintiffs’ claims lacked the substance to justify the federal lawsuit. She also dismissed a number of other claims.
