Fire Chief Accused Of Violation Of Civil Rights
As part of a civil rights investigation a fire chief has been accused of violation of civil rights. The Minneapolis Fire Chief, Bonnie Bleskachek, has been accused of denial of advancement opportunities to a male fire fighter in a retaliatory move. The investigation also reportedly found that the department was giving preference to women, and in particular gay women.The investigation began after a complaint was filed in 2003 by a man who claimed that he displaced a fire fighter that was friendly with the lesbian partner of the fire chief, and as a result he claimed that he was retaliated against.
The ruling, which was over twenty pages long, was signed by the civil rights director Michael Browne, and while being investigated Bleskachek went on leave in March. Fifty thousand dollars was being spent on funding the investigation, but this was later doubled to one hundred thousand dollars.
The first lesbian in the nation to be in charge of a large fire department, Bleskachek also faces a number of other lawsuits claiming that she mixed her personal life and relationships with her professional life.
