$850 Million Settlement For IBM From Microsoft
IBM has won an $850 million settlement from Microsoft for claims that resulted from the federal government’s antitrust case against Microsoft years ago. The district judge that ruled with regards to Microsoft’s anticompetitive practices stated that Microsoft had forced IBM to "desist from certain technological innovations and business initiatives."IBM will receive $775 million in cash and $75 million in credit for software from Microsoft. It is one of the largest payouts that Microsoft has had to make in some time. The corporation was accused of anticompetitive practices in 2000 by US District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson.
Microsoft had been accused of over-pricing for companies that did not follow its wishes, and charging different companies varying amounts based on the companies’ compliance with Microsoft’s wishes.
Over recent years, Microsoft has had to pay out over $3 billion on similar types of settlements with companies such as Gateway Computers, AOL, and Sun Microsystems Inc.
