School Board To Appeal Temporary Order On Book
A school board plans to appeal against a court order that barred the district from removing a book from its shelves. The Miami-Dade County School District voted earlier this week to continue with the appeal to remove a children’s book which is about life in Cuba from libraries in the district’s schools.Along with the book on life in Cuba the board wants to remove another twenty three books in the series. The book about life in Cuba received a complaint, stating that it did not give a true picture about life in Cuba under its communist government. However, the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida argued that the books were, in general, accurate and fought to keep them on the shelves.
A district judge ruled in favor of the ACLU, and following this both parties involved want to take the case to the court of appeals in order to get a final decision from the judge.
An ACLU spokesperson stated: "The school board is deciding to continue its senseless litigation and to waste taxpayer dollars that could be used to buy new books, rather than trying to get rid of books that the board approved through its own selection process."
