Teachers’ Federation Files Lawsuit
A lawsuit has been filed by a teacher federation in a bid to stop the district from cutting the pay of thousands of its members. The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers has filed the lawsuit in a bid to stop the pay of 18,000 of its members being cut by nearly four percent.The lawsuit was filed in Philadelphia’s Common Please Court, and aims to get the judge to order the district to pay in accordance to the guidelines of the 2004-2008 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
PFT President Ted Kirsch stated: "The District has no authority to unilaterally impose pay cuts on our Members. The District's actions are unfair, unreasonable and unjustified."
In 1999 staff were sent a letter that stated: "All 10 month employees who are paid on a 12 month basis will... now be paid 26 times a year. In years when there are no changes to your annual salary, all 26 checks will be for the same amount. This process is called 'smoothing'."
However, the PFT has been told now that changes will be starting in September that will change this format and affect the pay of the employees.
