Boy Convicted Of Baseball Bat Murder
A 13-year-old boy from Palmdale has been convicted of murder after beating another boy to death with a baseball bat after his team lost a game. The teen was convicted of second-degree murder at Lancaster Juvenile Court earlier this week. The name of the boy has been held due to his age.The victim of the attack was 15-year-old Jeremy Rourke. The boy struck Jeremy repeatedly in the knee and the head, and later that same night Rourke died from his injuries. The boy will be sentenced at the end of July, and legal experts figure that the sentence could range from probation to a custodial sentence.
The boy, who also played in the game, stated that he felt threatened by the older boy, and that Rourke had been pushing him and making racist statements. He stated: "I thought he was going to beat me up. I was scared." His lawyer states that the attack was not racially motivated and that his client was acting in self defence.
The hearing lasted for three days, and a number of team mates supported the defendant, stating that the victim was known for being violent and was a bully.
