Lawyer Sues Government For False Arrest
A lawyer is suing the US government for false arrest after spending two weeks imprisoned in 2004. The lawyer, Brandon Mayfield, was implicated in the Madrid train bombings when the FBI stated that they found his fingerprints on a bag of detonators at the scene. Three senior officials were said to have analyzed the fingerprints, but they turned out to be wrong.Two weeks after his arrest, Mayfield was released and the FBI issued an apology. However, Mayfield is now suing for the false arrest stating that he has never even been to Spain, and other legal professionals agree that he has a good case. Mayfield is a convert to Islam, and claims that it is his religion that resulted in him being singled out.
However, some are doubtful with regards to his chances of success when it comes to challenging certain parts of the Patriot Act. One of Mayfield’s lawyers stated: "Because the Patriot Act is up for renewal, Mr. Mayfield's case is important because it shows how the government can secretly avoid the civil rights and civil liberties of Americans - and leave no one secure from secret government spying and investigations."
