Parents Of Navy Veteran File Lawsuit
United Technologies Corp., its Sikorsky Aircraft subsidiary and General Electric are being sued by the parents of a Navy veteran that died in a helicopter crash in Italy. The veteran had survived the war in Iraq, only to be killed in the helicopter crash. Now the parents of Samuel P. Cox have filed a lawsuit seeking close to $10 million in damages.Cox was killed when the Sikorsky MH-53E Sea Dragon caught fire and crashed on land not long after take off. He was one of four crew members killed in the 2003 crash. The disaster took place on the island of Sicily, just 10 miles from the Navy’s air station.
The craft was mainly used to transport cargo to shore from ships, and a similar craft crashed in 1996, also killing four crew members on board. After this accident the Navy halted flights on these aircrafts, and the government conducted a study to look at the problems with the engines in these aircrafts.
The lawsuit alleges that crew members were not trained in emergency techniques, and it also claims that there have been many problems such as in-flight fires stemming from the engine in these crafts since 1993.
