Whirlpool Employees Continue With Lawsuit
Employees at the Whirlpool Corp factory are pursuing a two-year lawsuit claiming racial discrimination after mediation attempts failed. The 15 black employees involved in the lawsuit state that they have been continually passed over for promotions and have been subjected to racial discrimination. A number of white employees from the factor have come forward in support of the plaintiffs.Officials from Whirlpool state that the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission found no probable cause to support the claims, and that they are false. A company spokesman stated: "They were found to be without merit. We continue to believe the lawsuit is simply an effort to assert those same unfounded claims. And we intend to vigorously defend ourselves against them, and we do expect to prevail."
He went on to state that the company is a major corporation and that it is committed to equal opportunities and fair treatment. However, the plaintiffs tell a very different story. One states that racist graffiti was left on walls for long periods, that black people have to show ID to security whereas white people do not, and that black workers are pulled up on the tiniest point whereas whites are not.
One black worker stated that he tried to get something done about the discrimination. "I went numerous times to speak with anybody who could talk to me, from the vice president to the director of human resources over and over again, and it never changed."
