Federal Lawsuit Filed By Detectives
Two Cleveland detectives have filed a lawsuit against the city, alleging discrimination and violation of civil rights following an incident where they shot and killed a 15-year-old suspect in a robbery who was allegedly attacking them.The two detectives, Philip Habeeb and John Kraynik, state that after the shooting of Brandon McCloud – who was a suspect in a number of robberies on pizza delivery drivers – the city acted unfairly as the result of public pressure. The officers had been trying to serve a search warrant to search the suspect’s home when the incident took place.
The detectives claim that the city delayed their return to duty by nine months, and that this was because activists were claiming that the shooting was a racially motivated crime. The lawsuit was filed earlier this week, and the detectives are seeking $2 million in damages.
A special prosecutor cleared the detectives of wrongdoing, and they claimed that they acted in self defense when the shooting was carried out. The state and state Rep. Shirley A. Smith of Cleveland were also sued by the detectives for defamation.
