Tyson Foods Faces Class Action Suit
Poultry processing giant, Tyson Foods, could be facing a massive class action over the depression of wages through the hiring of illegal immigrants. The company and some of the management had charges pressed against them before but they were acquitted in 2003. However, they are now once again facing legal recourse over the matter of depressing wages through hiring immigrants.The class action involves over ten thousand people, and the suit makes allegations such as racketeering and corruption by violation of the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. In the suit, plaintiffs allege that the company hired undocumented workers in plants in Tennessee, Alabama, Indiana, Missouri, Texas and Virginia in order to hold back on wages.
In 2002 the company and some managers were charged with smuggling in illegal immigrants to work at its plants and save on money. It is alleged that one of the managers even committed suicide at that time, once the charges became publicly known.
It is thought unlikely that a settlement will be reached, but counsel for the plaintiffs states that could change: "That's how it appeared at the beginning of the case. That may change after the class becomes certified."
