Ex Microsoft Employee Can’t Do Google Job
A judge has ruled that an ex-employee of Microsoft cannot yet start on a new job he was hired to perform by Google because Microsoft fears that important secrets could be leaked that could harm its own business. The judge therefore granted a temporary restraining order that stops Kai-Fu Lee from working on any services or products at Google that bear any similarity to those he was working on at Microsoft.Google has now had to request a list of duties and jobs that the man can perform in line with the order, and this will be compiled and issued by Microsoft to ensure that none of the duties the staff member performs are similar to those he performed at Microsoft. Some of the duties he will be unable to perform while the restraining order is in place are research into Internet and desktop searching.
Google has described the decision given by the judge as a temporary measure to give both parties more time to resolve the issues at hand. A spokesperson stated: "We are confident that once the judge has done so he will side with Google and Dr. Lee. Microsoft will not prevail in their intimidation campaign."
However, Microsoft officials stated: "We felt we needed to take this step to protect our sensitive business information and to ensure that Google and Dr. Lee honor the confidentiality and non-competition agreements he made when he started working here."
