Babysitter Convicted Of Murder After Shaking Baby To Death
A Riverhead jury has convicted a babysitter of murder after she shook a baby in rage, causing the death of the infant. Arelis Mora was found to have shaken 5-month-old Jennifer Centeno with so much force that the infant died instantly. The babysitter collapsed in tears as the 6 men and 6 women of the jury announced the guilty verdict following 4 hours of deliberation.The incident occurred on October 18th. It was confirmed that the infant, who had been shaken violently in a fit of rage by the babysitter, was the victim of shaken-baby syndrome. Mora was convicted of second degree murder for her actions, and sentencing will be scheduled by Suffolk County Court Judge C. Randall Hinrichs.
Prosecutors plan to try and get 25 years to life for the babysitter, a native of Ecuador who came to the Unites States just 6 years ago. Assistant District Attorney Caren Manzello stated: "I hope it brings a greater awareness of the existence of the syndrome and the recognition of just exactly how harmful it is."
The babysitter’s attorney stated that there were a number of people that had been alone with the infant before she died. She stated: "I'm suggesting to you to look at what they've presented to you, but also what they have not presented. This is the death of a child, and the life of a woman who has six kids ... Jennifer Centeno unfortunately died, but Arelis Mora did not kill this child."
