Latest Ruling On Kids Of Gay Couples In California
The latest ruling has seen the California Supreme Court provide additional protection for the children of gay couples, as well as further recognizing the rights of same-sex couples when it comes to parenthood. The ruling states that gay and lesbian couples raising children must provide for the children in the event that they split up.The high court ruled that the laws applying to heterosexual couples with regards to accountability for absent father when it came to children will also apply in the case of gay and lesbian couples where reproductive scientific methods had been used for conception. The judge stated that being a parent "brings with it the benefits as well as the responsibilities."
Jill Hersh, who argued the case of a Marin County woman who was granted the right to be the second mother of twins after the birth mother moved out of state, said: "The court is now protecting the children of same sex parents in gay families in the same way children are protected with heterosexual couples in heterosexual families."
Comments were also made by those opposing gay marriage and child raising. One attorney stated: "Today's ruling defies logic and common sense by saying that children can have two moms. That policy establishes that moms and dads as a unit are irrelevant when it comes to raising children."
